The art: mapping, styles and textures
A lash map is a drawing in lengths, curls and textures, made for one pair of eyes. The perception science says what kind of change a lash line can make and how large it is. The rest is craft, and this chapter keeps the two apart.
The illusion
A dark fringe makes an eye look larger, by a measured amount
In a Japanese laboratory, 22 people compared one face with and without makeup, step by step. Mascara or false lashes made the eye look about 6 percent larger in width and height. More product did not add more: light mascara on the upper lashes worked as well as mascara with false lashes.1
Eyeliner alone enlarged the eye step by step, up to about 5 percent, but added nothing once the lashes were darkened. Eye shadow, judged by 104 women across six faces, did about the same. The authors explain all of it as assimilation, the illusion in which a ring makes the circle inside it look larger. That explanation is theirs; the sizes are the measurement.1
The same lab found that illusions on real faces top out near 5 percent, far below the plain circles of the textbook figure, and suggests faces only tolerate distortions that still look natural. Other labs saw the ceiling from the other side: thicker liner enlarged the eye up to about 1.5 mm, then the effect became erratic and too thick looked wrong.257
Darker lines worked better than lighter ones, and the illusion held when the face was turned or tilted and grew from a distance. On a hooded lid, people chose a thicker line than on a creased lid, 3.4 against 2.6 mm, to get the same effect.5426
At the atelier
A well-placed, even lash line gets most of the effect. That is why a lighter set can open an eye as much as a heavier one, and why we add length only where it earns its weight.
How large the same eye looked, with true size at 100
Bars start at 95 to show the differences. One laboratory's measurements; the circles are the classic illusion drawn without a face.
About six percent, and no more.
Light mascara did as much as false lashes. Past a point, a heavier line starts to look wrong and the effect shrinks.
Lines and tilt
Lines near the eye change its tilt. Lashes have not been tested.
Brows drawn at five angles pulled the eye's apparent tilt in their own direction. Unlike the size effect, this did not depend on how far the brow sat from the eye, so the two are different kinds of illusion. Lower brows made the eye look about 2 percent larger; the curve of the brow made no difference.32
No published study has measured how a liner wing, or longer lashes at the outer corner, changes the apparent tilt or length of an eye. The Müller-Lyer illusion, in which arrowheads change how long a line looks, is often given as the reason a flared corner lengthens the eye. Nobody has measured it on an eye.333
Taste in tilt is not fixed. When the outer corner of seven portraits was raised about five degrees, raters aged 19 or under preferred it and raters over 50 did not. In 60 photographed eyes, a larger visible iris and a stronger upward tilt went with higher attractiveness and a younger look.910

The eye, measured
The eye a map is drawn on
In 380 adults measured from calibrated photographs, the eye opening was 25.6 mm wide and 8.7 mm tall on average. Measured in 3D, young adults' eyes were about 31 mm wide. The difference is method, not people: the outer corner sits further back than the inner one, so a flat photograph shortens the eye.111214
Tilt, the height of the outer corner against the inner one, averaged about 2 degrees upward in young adults and about level in older ones. In another group of 300 young adults it averaged 4.7 degrees in men and 7 in women, so normal tilt depends on who is measured.1216
The lid itself varies in structure. A lid without a crease is built differently, with fat in front of the plate of the lid and the lifting muscle reaching the skin nearer the lashes, and the fold over the inner corner has a core of muscle. In 160 adults, lashes pointed further down when the lid had no crease. The upper lid carries 90 to 160 lashes in five or six rows, which is what the trade calls layers.19202145

What the evidence shows
A canthal tilt of 5 to 8 degrees is normal.
Measured averages run from about 2 to 7 degrees depending on the group, and fall to about level in older adults.1216
Natural lashes are longest at the centre.
Plausible and repeated everywhere, but no study reporting upper-lash length by position was found.
The eye's forward position averaged 14.7 mm in a population study of 1,063 people, and inner corners sat 31 to 33 mm apart in the studies above.181112

We measure your eyes before we map them: width, tilt, lid and the direction your own lashes grow. The map is drawn from those numbers, not from a chart.
Spacing
One eye-width apart is an art rule, not a measurement
The idea that the gap between the eyes equals the width of one eye comes from the neoclassical canons of art. Farkas, who tested nine such canons on 153 young adults, concluded that they do not describe the average face.1315
Tested on 103 young adults in Hong Kong, this canon held in nobody: every person had a gap wider than one eye. In the classic North American sample it held in a third, and the gap was wider in about half. Across six other samples it held in 0 to 35.5 percent.13
So close-set and wide-set are judgements made against an average face, not against a rule. Taken literally, the canon would call most people wide-set.13
At the atelier
When we say close-set or wide-set, we mean closer or wider than average, judged in the mirror. It describes where the eye's weight sits, not a fault to correct.

Two eyes
Two eyes are never identical, and both change with age
In 69 healthy adults, 87 percent had a measurable difference in height between their two eye openings. Large differences are uncommon: in another study only 5.7 percent had a difference of a millimetre or more. The most uneven feature between two eyes is the height of the lid crease, by an average of 0.65 mm in women and 0.9 mm in men.272628
Symmetry is attractive across cultures, as are averageness and sex-typical features. Yet upper-eye makeup raised attractiveness without changing measured asymmetry, so its benefit does not come through symmetry.2532
The eye opening widens by about a tenth between 12 and 25, then narrows by about 2.5 mm between 35 and 85. The eyeball itself does not move; the lids change around it. The outer corner drifts down toward level, the upper lid changes shape from about 40, and lashes get shorter, finer and lighter: 8.0 mm on average in the twenties, 6.4 mm at 50 to 65.17122223
At the atelier
We map each eye on its own. Where one lid is heavier, it may need a different curl, and the measurements say that is the usual case, not the exception. For mature eyes, a little lift and contrast does more than length.

Contrast and length
Darker reads younger. Longer stops helping.
Women's faces have more light-dark contrast around the eyes and lips than men's, and cosmetics increase it. Contrast falls with age, and raising it makes a face look younger and healthier.293031
In one controlled study, contrast added under the eye lowered attractiveness while upper-eye makeup raised it. It is a single study with standard grayscale makeup, the only measured hint about lower lashes, and not a rule.32
Length has an optimum. Rated health and attractiveness both peaked at lashes about one third of the eye's width and fell beyond it, in faces from four groups and for raters of both sexes. On a 26 to 31 mm eye, one third is about 9 to 10 mm, a little above the natural average. That last step is our arithmetic; the study rated rendered faces with even lashes, not extension sets.8111223

Longer spikes are a style choice, and a good one for a dramatic look. We place them as accents, and keep the base of the set close to the length your eye carries well.

What the evidence shows
Longer lashes are always more attractive.
In the ratings, preference rose and then fell, peaking near a third of the eye's width.8
Maps
A map is lengths in zones, and its rules are convention
A lash map divides the lash line into zones and gives each a length. A US patent defines three zones by landmarks, from the tear duct to the iris, across the iris, and on to the end of the lid, and gives lengths per look: natural 8, 9 and 10 mm; doll 8, 10 and 9; a dramatic look 8, 10 and 12 or 13.35
A Japanese design sheet uses five to seven marks per eye, with the reasoning written out: length at the centre shows the height of the eye and the iris, length at the outer corner gives width. Another patent uses the trade names directly: cat eye is longer toward the outer corners, doll eye longer at the centre. Trade guides add squirrel, which peaks before the corner.363742
The national standards ask for eye shape, symmetry and balance to be assessed, and Texas names eye shapes as a training topic. None of them names a style or a map. The eye-shape rules in trade guides, such as cat for round eyes and doll for hooded lids, are convention. No study has measured a map's effect on how an eye is seen.344042

Our maps start from your measurements and the look you want, and we check them in the mirror with your eyes open. The eye-shape rules are where we begin, not where we stop.

Curls, fans and textures
The vocabulary of the craft
Curls are lettered by strength: J is the flattest, then B, C and D. L and M curls have a flat base and a lifted tip. No standard fixes their angles; each maker draws its own chart, and supplier guides disagree on which curl suits which lid. The measured fact behind the choice is anatomical: lids without a crease go with lashes that point further down, and some groups of people have lower lash lift and curl angles.36432124
The UK standard defines volume lashes as fine fibres made into a fan, matched to what the natural lash can carry, and gives no count. A Russian patent for mega volume describes fans of 2 to 20 fibres. The 2D to 6D labels, and where mega begins, are trade usage with no agreed boundary.343839
Textures are defined only by the trade. Wispy places spikes 2 to 3 mm longer than the base at regular intervals; about 2 mm reads soft, 4 to 5 mm dramatic. Wet look uses narrow, fully closed fans that read as single wet hairs. A smooth, dense set reads as a drawn line, and the eyeliner studies give that effect a plausible basis.414615
Layers come from the lash rows. A patent describes giving upper and lower rows different lengths, and a supplier guide warns against putting the longest lengths on the lowest layer, where the youngest, shortest lashes sit.3944

Our curl chart is our own, like every maker's. We choose the curl from the angle your lashes grow at and the lid they have to clear, and we show you the difference in the mirror before we commit to it.
