Adhesive: the chemistry of the bond, and the eye beside it
Lash glue is a cyanoacrylate, the chemistry of instant glue, asked to cure in seconds on a lash less than a tenth of a millimetre wide, a few millimetres from an open eye. This chapter follows it from the bottle to the bond to what it breaks down into, and sets out what eye clinics, allergy studies and regulators have found.
The molecule
Why a cyanoacrylate grabs in seconds
Lash glue belongs to the family of instant glues. When the glues used by two Finnish lash technicians were analysed, ethyl cyanoacrylate was the main ingredient, and Canada's rules name ethyl, methyl and isopropyl cyanoacrylate as the lash-glue ingredients it regulates.1929
Each small molecule carries two groups that pull hard on electrons, a nitrile and an ester, on the same carbon. That leaves the far end of its double bond exposed. A trace of water or a weak base is enough to attack it, and the thin film of moisture on almost any surface supplies one.1
Each addition leaves a negative charge on the end of the chain, shared over those two groups, so the end stays alive and takes the next molecule. The chains grow to between 100,000 and 10 million in molecular weight. Measured in solution, the growth rate is close to a million, against 775 for the acrylic of nail powders: about a thousand times faster.1
Nothing inside the glue stops the chain; small amounts of water, oxygen or carbon dioxide do not. What keeps it liquid in the bottle is a few parts per million of strong acid, plus inhibitors such as hydroquinone. Canada caps hydroquinone at 0.1 percent in lash and brow adhesives.129
Separate molecules. Acid in the glue keeps them from reacting.

Curing
Humidity sets the speed
Because moisture starts the chain, the air in the room matters. For a standard ethyl glue, the maker's data sheet reports a hold in under five seconds at 22 degrees and 50 percent humidity, faster cure at higher humidity, and curing that continues for at least 24 hours after the bond feels set.8
Cure is fastest right at the surface and slows deeper into the glue, a laboratory study with a Raman microscope found. That favours a thin layer, where more of the glue sits close to a surface. That last step is reasoning from the study, not a measurement on lashes.7
Glue that evaporates before it cures settles nearby as a fine chalky powder, called bloom. Short-chain glues do it; the alkoxy glues sold as low-odour largely avoid it. Dry air has its own cost: in one factory, glue vapour lingered in dry air and caused an outbreak of skin irritation among assembly workers, and it stopped once the humidity was held above 55 percent.19
Cure also gives off heat. In a burns-unit test, three grams poured on cotton reached 91 degrees. A lash takes a micro-drop, so that is the far extreme, not a risk in the chair.27
Relative humidity, in percent, and what the studies saw
In fingerprint fuming, the vapour formed flat films at 60 percent, noodles at 70 to 90 and fine threads above. The dry band's lower edge is drawn for clarity. No study has measured a lash salon.

What the evidence shows
Lash glue must be used at 40 to 60 percent humidity and 20 to 24 degrees.
The only sources are trade data sheets measured at 22 degrees and 50 percent. It is a working range for cure speed, not a health finding.8
Shock curing makes extensions fall off.
A trade term. No peer-reviewed study defines or measures it for lash glue.
Which molecule starts the chain is still argued. A 2007 study concluded it was salts dissolved in the moisture, not water itself; a 2026 study found chains capped with pieces of water. Either way, moisture on the lash and in the air speeds the cure, and humidity changes the shape the polymer takes: in fingerprint work, about 80 percent gave the best results.456

We keep the room at a steady humidity and temperature, so the glue behaves the same way on the last lash as on the first.
Adhesive, in the libraryThe bond feels set in seconds. The chemistry goes on for a day.
Cure continues for at least 24 hours after the bond feels set, and it is fastest right against the lash.
The family
Longer side chains: softer, less vapour, the same sting
Cyanoacrylates differ by the side chain on the ester. Methyl and ethyl are the industrial and household instant glues; n-butyl and 2-octyl are the skin and surgical glues; methoxyethyl and ethoxyethyl are sold as low-odour.1
Cured ethyl glue is a rigid glass up to about 150 degrees. Longer, bulkier chains give softer polymer: 2-octyl softens at about 10 degrees, so it bends with skin. Heated past that point, ethyl glue starts to unzip back into its liquid ingredient.1
Less vapour is a real gain: the alkoxy glues evaporate less and bloom less. But in mice, the vapour concentration that halved the breathing rate, the standard test of irritation, was 0.7 parts per million for ethyl and 1.0 for methoxyethyl. The authors called the four glues they tested similar in irritant strength.125

We choose the adhesive for your eyes and for the set. For sensitive eyes that means a low-fume formula, chosen because it gives off less vapour, not because it cannot irritate.

Breakdown
Every cyanoacrylate gives off some formaldehyde
Cured cyanoacrylate is slowly broken down by water. The chain is cut, and the pieces are formaldehyde and, finally, a cyanoacetate. This was shown in 1966, and the reaction runs much faster in alkaline conditions.21
The longer the side chain, the slower the release. Over 38 days in a salt solution at body temperature, n-octyl glue released very little, while n-butyl released the most of the surgical glues tested. Even the medical 2-octyl glue gave off formaldehyde in a sealed-chamber test.2328
In lash glues it has been looked for directly. Of 20 professional lash glues tested in 2022, 15 released formaldehyde and none listed it. An earlier Japanese analysis found it above the standard threshold in all three lash glues tested.1011
Canada limits formaldehyde to 0.01 percent in cosmetics that give off its vapour in use. Whether that limit is applied to a glue that forms formaldehyde as it ages, we could not confirm.29
Lash glues found to release formaldehyde
The 2022 test shows release, not the exact amount. None of the professional glues that released it listed it.
The eye
What eye clinics actually see
The largest series comes from Japanese eye clinics: 107 women seen between 2007 and 2010 for problems after extensions. Most had glue or remover reach the eye; the next largest group had an allergy of the lids to the glue. All recovered with drops or ointment.11
A 2019 review counted lid allergy as 79 percent of the complications reported in medical journals, though most of those cases come from that one series.12
Surveys of students give a broader picture with less certainty. In two Nigerian surveys itching was the most common complaint. In Ghana, 208 wearers examined at the slit lamp reported watery eyes more often than 208 non-wearers, 38.5 against 21.6 percent, and showed more signs of surface disease. That is an association, not proof of cause.131415
Followed after a first set, 32 people mostly felt something in the eye at one hour; the tear film was least stable at one week, and symptoms were back to where they started by a month. In people with dry eye, taking extensions off improved symptoms and tear stability over four weeks.1617
107 clinic patients, by what went wrong
Japanese eye clinics, 2007 to 2010. Four people had both of the first two. The series counts problems, not how often they happen.
The glue is not the only chemical in the chair. Under-eye gel pads have been found to contain a preservative known to cause allergy, and a misplaced remover gel once caused a chemical injury in an eye that had had laser surgery.1218

Your eyes stay fully closed from the first fibre to the last. In the clinic series most problems began with glue or remover reaching the eye, so that is the rule we do not bend.
Sensitive eyes, in the libraryAllergy
The liquid sensitises. The cured bond does not.
It is the unreacted liquid, and its vapour, that causes allergy; the fully cured polymer is inert. Cyanoacrylates were once thought not to sensitise because they cure so fast. They are now well-documented causes of allergic skin reactions, and acrylates were named Contact Allergen of the Year in 2012. Ethyl cyanoacrylate's official hazard labels include serious eye irritation.212033
Lash-glue allergy has been reported in clients, as eyelid dermatitis, and in the people who apply it. Two Finnish lash technicians who worked with glue for hours a day developed rhinitis, and one asthma. In their challenge test the air held about 0.08 parts per million of glue, below the workplace limit of 0.2. That fits sensitisation, where very small amounts are enough. The unit conversion and that reading are ours.241926
Allergy to cyanoacrylate has not been shown to carry over to nail acrylics. Ordinary latex and polyethylene gloves let acrylic liquids through, while nitrile-neoprene and butyl gloves hold them for up to a few hours: shown for nail acrylics, not tested for lash glue. How common glue allergy is among lash artists is unknown; a 2022 systematic review found the data lacking.2122
Ethyl cyanoacrylate in the air, in parts per million
From a factory survey, a mouse study, the US workplace limit and a lash-glue challenge test, converted by us from 0.4 milligrams per cubic metre. No one has measured the air in a lash salon.
Reviews of surgical use suggest that humidity, ventilation and filtered air may reduce exposure to the vapour. It is advice, not a tested result: a factory worker in humid Singapore still developed glue asthma.353736
At the atelier
We keep the room ventilated and open the adhesive only when it is needed. The glue that is still liquid is the part that matters, so it never touches your skin.
Testing
What a patch test can and cannot tell you
A dermatologist's patch test includes ethyl cyanoacrylate in the standard North American series, tested at 10 percent. It has known blind spots.21
Test material can cure in the syringe and read falsely negative. In one shoemaker with glue allergy, glue dissolved in acetone in aluminium test chambers gave false negatives where other chambers gave positives. Medical 2-octyl glue does not cross-react with ethyl glue, so the product itself has to be tested. And because acrylates are strong sensitisers, testing with them can itself cause allergy.212023
Medical glue is not exempt. A 2026 analysis of 25,442 surgical patients found allergy to 2-octyl glue in about 4 percent, above 20 percent on a second exposure in some groups, and earlier exposure to cosmetic acrylates was a risk factor.38
A salon patch test, a few extensions placed days before a first set, is a different thing. It is widely used. The research for this chapter found no study of how well it predicts a reaction.
At the atelier
Tell us about any reaction you have had to lash glue, nail glue or medical skin glue. We plan the patch test and the adhesive around it, and we say plainly that a patch test lowers the risk without ruling it out.
Where a skin test can miss
- The test material
- can cure in the syringe and read negative
- The chamber
- aluminium with acetone gave false negatives in one case
- The glue type
- medical 2-octyl glue does not show on the standard test
- The test itself
- acrylates can sensitise the person being tested

What the evidence shows
Hypoallergenic glue cannot cause allergy.
In the United States the word has no legal definition, and makers do not have to prove it. No study compares reaction rates between lash glues.34
The rules
Three regulators, one bottle
Canada treats lash glue as a cosmetic. Cyanoacrylate lash adhesives must be sold for professional use only and carry set warnings, beginning with 'For application by trained professionals only'. In its 2023 to 2024 check of 75 lash glues still on sale, Health Canada required corrective action for 42, mostly over labels.2930
The United States also treats lash glue as a cosmetic, with no approval before sale, while a glue for closing skin wounds is a regulated medical device. In the European Union, guidance from 2023 says a glue whose only job is to attach false lashes has no cosmetic function, so general product and chemical rules apply instead. That guidance is not binding.313932
2008
United States: devices
Skin glue for closing wounds is classed as a medical device. Lash glue is in neither device class.39
2022
United States: cosmetics
The FDA treats false lashes, extensions and their adhesives as cosmetics, and advises checking the ingredients.31
2023
European Union
A glue that only attaches false lashes is not a cosmetic, under the scope guidance.32
2024
Canada: a market check
Of 75 lash glues still sold, 42 needed corrective action, mostly over labels.30
